Standing Against the Shore Breaks of Life

I was only in water up to my shins when I turned around and a giant wave nailed me from out of nowhere. It knocked me right off my feet, tossed me around like a rag doll and forced my face to the sand under the water. One minute I was enjoying the sunshine and the next minute I was fighting to protect my head and come up for air.

Shore break waves are brutal! They break in very shallow water and look innocent enough until they’re right on top of you. Since there is no way to grip the sand they knock your feet out from under you and for those few precious moments they take over your life.

Shore break waves are a lot like our problems. They start out small or even invisible. The next thing you know you’re desperately fighting for your life and wondering if you’re ever going to be on solid ground again. Sound familiar?

Want to know how to stand against the shore breaks of life?

Jesus teaches us how to do just that in Matthew 7:24-28 when he says, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.  When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

Jesus never said we wouldn’t have problems. In fact he says just the opposite. You will have problems. No doubt about it.

The question is do you want to be standing on the sand when the wave hits or on solid rock?
I’m guessing you would choose solid rock. Who would ever build their house on the sand? I mean we can’t even keep our E-Z-ups anchored in the sand when the wind blows. How much more a house or our very lives?

It’s not just about the knowing it’s about the doing. You can know everything Jesus ever taught and still be standing on the sand getting pummeled by the waves.

It’s when you start doing what he said that you begin to build a strong foundation in your life. Only this foundation will help you not only face your problems but overcome them. It’s time to stop letting the waves of our problems be the master of our life and start building on Jesus. Do what he says. He’s our only sure foundation.

I’m praying for you,
Zac
